Both Jesus Aguilar and Jean Segura will be on their respective All-Star teams. The first baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers and the shortstop for the Seattle Mariners were the winners of an online fan vote for the final roster spots for the National League and American League teams respectively.
Aguilar received 20.2 million votes helping him to secure his first selection to the All-Star Game. That total is the second highest ever for the All-Star Final Vote, will only the 20.8 million last year received by Justin Turner from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Venezuelan, who is 28, was tied on Wednesday for the lead in the National League in home runs with 23 and will join three other teammates from the Brewers at the game. Brewers’ outfielders Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain were already chosen as was Josh Hader a relief pitcher.
Aguilar is hitting .307 with 67 RBIs, and has knocked in 12 runs over his last seven games. Aguilar said that he has been swinging the bat very good of late.
Brandon Belt the first baseman for the San Francisco Giants was second in the balloting in the NL followed by the Dodgers’ Max Muncy, Nationals’ Trea Turner and Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter.
Belt thanked his teammates, social media in San Francisco and the fans for their efforts to send him to the All-Star Game, Belt jokingly said that he told the selection process has been interfered with by Russia.
Segura said he could not believe the support he had received from his teammates, including pitcher Felix Hernandez who yesterday was in the city trying to get votes, the organization and people in Seattle.
Segura won the last spot for the AL with 13.5 million votes. Following him were Boston’s Andrew Benintendi, the Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton, the Twins’ Eddie Rosario and the Angels’ Andrelton Simmons.
Seattle’s shortstop, who is 28, is hitting .329 and his 116 hits are second in the majors. He joins Marlins teammates Mitch Haniger, Edwin Diaz and Nelson Cruz on the AL All-Star team.
In 2013, while with Milwaukee, Segura played for the NL All-Star team. He becomes the first player for Seattle to win the voting by fans for the team’s final spot.
The All-Star Game is scheduled for Tuesday in Washington at Nationals Park.
