Red Sox Look to Clinch American East and Other Playoff Snapshots

The 2017 Major League Baseball regular season is just five days remaining. After Sunday, 10 teams will continue into the postseason and 30 teams will go home.

However, there are still divisions up for grabs and wildcard positions to fill in, as teams jockey for position as the last full weekend of the regular season approaches.

Minnesota was able to clinch a wildcard berth this week after losing 103 games last season. The Twins secured the second place AL wildcard spot despite losing to the Cleveland Indians 4-2.

The Twins earned a spot in the postseason after the Los Angeles Angels were beaten Wednesday night by the Chicago White Sox. This is the first time since 2010 the Twins have reached the postseason.

However, postseason hopes for the Milwaukee Brewers continue to fade, after the Brewers lost 6-0 to Cincinnati Wednesday night.

The Brewers, who earlier on Wednesday were eliminated from the National League Central race when the Cubs beat St. Louis, fell 2 ½ games behind Colorado in the race for the second wildcard sport of the NL. Milwaukee has now lost five of its last seven games played.

The AL East can be clinched by the Boston Red Sox with a win over Houston or a loss by the New York Yankees, to Tampa Bay. This will be the first back to back titles in the AL East in Boston franchise history if they pull it off.

Colorado holds a lead of 2 ½ games over Milwaukee and 3 ½ over St. Louis in the race to win the second wildcard berth in the NL. A win on Wednesday by the Rockies reduced their magic number to three over the Brewers and to four over the Cardinals.

The big game on tap Wednesday is Boston hosting Houston. The two teams continue to jockey for positions in the postseason. Houston is chasing Cleveland for the best AL record, while Boston is trying to fend off a late season challenge by the Yankees to clinch the division.

Plus the final series of the season, four-game against the Astros, may be a preview of the AL Divisions series that begins next week.

Boston currently holds a lead of three games in the division over the Yankees with just four to play and both teams have won 7 of their last 10 games heading into the final four games of the regular season.
