Houston Astros to Play Series at Tampa Bay’s Tropicana Field as Home Team

The Houston Astros will play a series later starting Tuesday against the Texas Rangers in St. Petersburg, Florida at Tropicana Field home of the Tampa Bay Rays, due to flooding across the Houston area from Hurricane turned Tropical Storm Harvey.

The relocation was officially announced by Major League Baseball on Monday afternoon for a three-game series saying that the Astros will play as the home team and bat last in the game.

Earlier on Monday, the Associated Press reported that the home series of three-games for Houston against the New York Mets, which begins Friday, will also be played in St. Petersburg at Tropicana Field.

However, it was announced later by MLB that it has yet to determine what the location will be for the series between the Mets and Astros.

The players union and MLB will also jointly make a $1 million donation to the Harvey relief efforts in and around the Houston area.

The area is dealing with extreme flooding after the storm made its landfall on the Gulf Coast of Texas south of the fourth largest city in the U.S.

Both the Rangers and Astros flew into Dallas following their games on Sunday in California to wait for the news of where their three-game series that starts on Tuesday would be played.

The two teams will now fly to Florida, where Houston will host the Rangers at a park far from home, just as they did in 2008 following Hurricane Ike when they played a pair of home games up north in Milwaukee.

This means that the Astros might end up playing 19 consecutive games away from their home field where the leaders of the American League West have not played since August 24. Following Houston’s three-game series with the Mets scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Astros embark on a 10-game road trip.

The current change of location will not affect the Astros players as they are well aware what they are going through is far less strenuous and certainly not life threatening like many people in the Houston area are suffering at this time.

Houston leads the AL West by 13 ½ games over both the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels. The Astros are just 5-5 over their last 10 games played but own the best record in the AL and the second best in the majors at 79-51.
