New York Yankees Return to Respectability Will Come from the Mound

If anyone is wondering from where the New York Yankees will return to respectability, it covers an area that is 60 feet and 6 inches from home plate.

If the Yankees hope to become relevant during the 2016 MLB regular season they are going to need their pitchers to pitch them out of the American League East cellar.

The Yankees offense might be stronger than many though it would be to start the season, but it is doubtful it will be like the team of 2015 that scored the second most runs in the majors.

Therefore, that means it will likely be the starting rotation that will have to turn the cellar dwellers into AL East winners.

If New York can get consistent pitching from its starters, more often they might reach the later innings with a lead so that relievers like Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller and starting on Monday Aroldis Chapman can then dominate.

The former ace for the Yankees staff, CC Sabathia pitched well Wednesday throwing seven innings of scoreless baseball.

On Thursday, Masahiro Tanaka, the team’s current ace dominated, with eight innings of shutout baseball allowing only five hits, while fanning seven and only walking one.

Tanaka is strong, but likely, not great, He is likely a strong No. 2 or even No. 3 starter instead of being the ace. The Yanks need Tanaka to lead them in 2016, if they are to have any type of shot at winning the AL East or grab a wildcard.

Tanaka on Thursday looked very strong in just his first ever outing at Baltimore’s Camden Yards. The batting order for the Orioles did not find any answers for the right-hander, which continued his strong start to the 2016 season.

With his eight innings of shutout baseball, his ERA is now at just 2.29 in his six starts. Nevertheless, because of the thus far anemic offense of the Yankees, he left without getting a decision.

However, he was the biggest reason New York was still in the game late and along with the rest of the Yankees starters, could be the way the Yankees are able to make something of their 2016 season.

At this point, after just 26 games, the Yankees are a dismal 9-17. They currently trail division leading Boston by 7 games and need to turn the season around quickly are even the pitching staff with not be able to save them.
