Yankees Need to Solve Problem With Dellin Betances

On Monday, the New York Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins 2-1 in a potential preview of an American League wildcard matchup. By winning, the Yankees extended their lead in the wildcard race over the Twins to five games.

Jaime Garcia had nine strikeouts while allowing just an unearned run through 5 2/3 innings. New York rookie slugger Aaron Judge hit home run No. 44 and Aroldis Chapman pitched a dominating 1 2/3 innings for the save.

However, the excitement over the eighth win its their last 10 games for the Yankees could not match the groans that rang down from the Yankees’  fans in the Bronx when Chapman came in to bail out wild Dellin Betances.

Questions were obviously on the minds of Yankees fans and coaches about whether they can count on Betances who is becoming increasingly more erratic.

Following the game Betances said he could not put his team in that type of situation.

His manager Joe Girardi said the team needed to get Betances straightened out, because he is an important piece to the team moving forward.

However, he is but at the same time is not. The Yankees are able to brag about their best bullpen in the 20 years Brian Cashman has bene general manager. With Chapman as the closer they are at their best, and their optimal lineup has Betances throwing the eighth and allowing the likes of Tommy Kahnle, Chad Green and David Robison to freelance and pitch more than one inning.

That is why Girardi sees it so important to get Betances back on track as the setup man for Chapman. They have a five-game margin of error to try to work things out and possess the pitchers to easily cover Betances and lift him prior to creating damage behind repair, if he were to falter yet again.

That is exactly what happened on Monday. Betances came in during the eighth inning to protect the team’s lead of one run. However, he loaded the bases through hitting Robbie Grossman, and walking both Max Kepler and Brian Dozier.

Betances told reporters after the game that his timing is off which caused the base on balls and he cannot afford to give any free passes.

This season, his control has been out of control as he has hit 10 batters and walked 43.

Historically September has been the worst month for Betances. The Yankees hope that changes and changes quickly, as the postseason is just over two weeks away.
