Rick Porcello Named Cy Young Winner in American League

Rick Porcello the right-handed pitcher of the Boston Red Sox was named on Wednesday as the American League Cy Young Award winner for 2016.

The second place finisher in the balloting was Justin Verlander the veteran pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and third was Corey Kluber the right-hander from the Cleveland Indians.

Porcello received just 8 first place votes and a total of 137 points. Verlander had 14 first place votes but his total points were 132.

The difference in Porcello’s favor was the number of second place votes (18) that he received and the two voters that left Verlander off their entire ballots.

The gap of five points was the second smallest in the history of the prestigious pitching award. Verlander lost the AL Cy Young award in 2012 to David Price by just four points, so he has been on the wrong side of the award’s two smallest gaps in voting.

If Verlander would have won the 2012 award and the 2016 award, he would have three for his career.

This was just the third time in the award’s history where a winner did not have the most votes for first place. In 1992, Tom Glavine won the award over Trevor Hoffman with two fewer first place votes and in 2009, Tim Lincecum won the award over Adam Wainwright with 1 less first place vote.

Porcello won his first Cy Young Award and it is the first time he has ever received any votes for a Cy Young award.

Porcello led the majors in wins with 22 and ended the season with an ERA of 3.15. He pitched 223 innings, which marked his career high.

Porcello became the first pitcher with the Red Sox to win the Cy Young since 1999 and 2000 when Pedro Martinez won it for two straight seasons.

Besides Porcello, other Red Sox pitchers to win the Cy Young were Martinez, Roger Clemens, with three, and Jim Lonborg.

Kluber earned 3 first place votes, while Zach Britton the closer for the Baltimore Orioles was fourth in voting and received five first place votes.

Only 65 points separated the top four finishers in the voting.

Votes for the awards are cast following the last game of the regular season and before any games are played in the postseason. Because of this, it is a regular season award and not postseason as well.
