Reds, Alfredo Simon Reunite With Deal

simonTheir starting rotation accompanied by injury questions with Homer Bailey and John Lamb recovering from off-season surgeries, and Michael Lorenzen suffering a UCL tear, the Cincinnati Reds brought back a familiar face in Alfredo Simon.

The 34-year-old right-hander logged three seasons with the Reds from 2012-14, posting  24-16 record with a 3.16 ERA over 345 innings. Simon was 15-10 with a 3.44 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 32 starts and 196.1 innings in 2014. He was traded to Detroit for a minor league pitcher and infielder Eugenio Suarez, who is projected as Cincinnati’s Opening Day third baseman.

Simon, who will reportedly get a $2 million base salary and can reach an extra $1.5 million in incentives, was durable for the Tigers, making 31 starts and covering 187 innings, but he struggled to a 5.05 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP while surrendering 201 hits.

The Reds hope Simon will rebound and provide veteran leadership to a rotation that will likely include like Anthony Bailey, Desclafani, Raisel Iglesias and Lamb. Brandon Finnegan is also in the mix for a starting role.
