Accustomed to building a bullpen on a shoestring budget, the Tampa Bay Rays are now confronted with finding a closer through April and May after power right-hander Brad Boxberger underwent abdominal muscle surgery.
Boxberger, who was acquired from the San Diego Padres before the 2015 campaign, was an American League All-Star last year, finishing with 41 saves in 47 opportunities and striking out 74 in 63 innings.
The 29-year-old Farquhar recorded 16 saves for the Seattle Mariners in 2013 while Cedeno and Geltz each have two big league saves. Webb, who hails from nearby Clearwater, has appeared in 357 Major League games over seven seasons – including 40 last season with Cleveland (3.20 ERA) – but has no saves. Colome saw action in 43 games for the Rays in 2015, including 13 starts.
