Look Out American League Here Come the Kansas City Royals

The Kansas City Royals are making a surge in the American League Central but will it continue and be enough to lift them into the postseason.

Many baseball pundits wrote Kansas City off saying there was no chance the defending World Series Champions would make the playoff. Just a few weeks ago, the Royals were a dreadful 51-58 and 11 games behind in the AL Central and 9 ½ behind in the race for the second and final AL wildcard.

It would be a true statement to say many fans of the Royals also considered their team out of the playoff race.

Now the Royals are on a tear having won 14 of their past 16 games. The surge has people wondering if the Royals were written off too early or if this is, just an anomaly and the Royals will return to mediocrity they experienced during most of the season.

The Royals really do not have a chance at the AL Central title, as they sit 8 ½ games behind the Cleveland Indians and would have to leap frog Detroit in reaching first place. However, the wildcard race for the AL is not out of the question.

The Royals are out of that race by just 4 games.

The last spot is currently held by the Baltimore Orioles and between them and the Royals are the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners, while Houston is only a half game behind the Royals.

Even the New York Yankees only one game behind the Royals have an outside shot at reaching the postseason.

Kansas City has 37 games to play. Twenty are against teams that have winning records of which 11 of the 20 are on the road. This season, Kansas City is a dreadful 25-39 on the road.

It is not out of the question, but many teams in the chase for the wildcard have easier stretch run schedules and the Royals must make up four games leaping over a number of teams.

At this time of the season back in 2014, the Royals were leading the AL Central with a record of 70-55. They ended up with a wildcard berth. Last season, the team was 77-48 and leading by 13 games.

While the team has improved its status a great deal this season, they were not in this type of situation the past two seasons when they reached the postseason.

The Royals however, should never be counted out until the figures show they cannot reach the postseason, as the team has shown at different times during the season why they are the defending champions.
