Baltimore Orioles star Adam Jones and Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton are among those returning to play for the U.S. 28-man World Baseball Classic team.
In addition, the roster will include Nolan Arenado from the Colorado Rockies, Paul Goldschmidt from the Arizona Diamondback, San Francisco Giants Buster Posey and Pittsburgh Pirate’s Andrew McCutchen.
For pitchers, the U.S. roster includes Cleveland Indians Andrew Millers, Tampa Bay Rays Chris Archer, Detroit Tigers Michael Fulmer, Kansas City Royals Danny Duffy, Oakland A’s Sonny Gray, Seattle Mariners Drew Smyly and Toronto Blue Jays Marcus Stroman and J.A. Happ.
The complete roster was announced by USA Baseball on Wednesday and included 18 former or current All-Stars, 2 MVPs and 9 Gold Glove award winners.
The U.S. team will be managed by Jim Leyland, while the general manager will be Joe Torre.
The most players from any one MLB team are from the Marlins with 3. Eight teams have two players apiece.
The designated pitcher pool consists of Fulmer, Gray, Smyly, Happ, Alex Wilson and Brett Cecil.
This is the first time that teams can select as many as two pitchers to join the team following each of the rounds.
Returning from the WBC squad of 2013 for the U.S. will be Texas Rangers Jonathan Lucroy, Kansas City Royals Eric Hosmer and Houston Astros Luke Gregerson.
The U.S. plays its games in the first round in Pool C in Miami at Marlins Park. The American team will open its tournament play March 10 against Colombia.
The team will then play the Dominican Republic, the defending champions, March 11 followed by Canada March 12.
The roster for the Dominican Republican includes Bartolo Colon the 43-year old veteran pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, Seattle’s Robinson Cano and Baltimore’s Manny Machado.
Thirteen players for Puerto Rico return from its runner team of four years ago. Included in the returnees are Houston’s Carlos Beltran, Angel Pagan a free agent and White Sox Giovanni Soto.
Canada will have Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman and Dalton Pompey of Oakland.
Mexico’s tournament roster will included Los Angeles Dodgers star Adrian Gonzalez along with Sergio Romo a free agent reliever who is close to signing a contract with the Dodgers.
Representing Australia will be Liam Hendriks a reliever for Oakland and Peter Moylan a free agent who last played for Kansas City.
The tournament starts March 6 and ends March 22 and will be played in the U.S., Mexico, South Korea and Japan.
