Jake Lamb One of Best Young Power Hitters in Baseball

At this point in time in Major League Baseball, there are more third basemen that are power hitters than at possibly any time prior.

Nolan Arenado, Kris Bryant and Josh Donaldson the reigning MVP in the American League have each hit 20 or more home runs this season. Add in Manny Machado and Evan Longoria who have each hit 18 and the argument is strong that today’s third baseman are the best power hitters as a group than ever before.

However, one player getting less attention but is also a great young player is Jake Lamb with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Lamb is playing in just his second complete season in the big leagues. On Sunday, he belted home run No. 19 on the season.

Lamb has hit four homers in his past five games, seven over his past 15 games and 15 over his past 42. His 15 round trippers since May 16 are third in baseball behind only the 17 of Bryant and the 16 of Adam Duvall.

His home run on Sunday improved his stats to a .292 batting average with 19 home runs and 59 RBIs. He is second amongst all hitters that qualify in slugging percentage trailing just David Ortiz. The Red Sox DH has a .677 slugging percentage while Lamb’s is .609.

Lamb was picked in the sixth round in 2012 from the University of Washington. He was not an elite baseball prospect, but never considered an unknown.

Baseball America had him listed as the tenth best baseball prospect during the 2014 season.

Lamb, who is 25, had a batting average in Double-A and Triple-A during the 2014 season of .327 with 15 homers and 108 games.

With the Diamondbacks in 107 games last season, Lamb hit six homers but did not get the attention other third baseman did such as the Cubs’ Bryant.

Arizona has been successful in developing position players into players that surpass ceilings that were previously perceived for them.

Players such as A.J. Pollock and Paul Goldschmidt are much better overall hitters as well as all-around players than was expected.

It appears now that Lamb is taking the same path. He has not reached the heights of Bryant or even Arenado, but his power displays at the plate are proving this is his coming out season and he will be an elite player one day.
