Could This World Series Be One of the Best Ever?

With a Game 6 victory on Tuesday night, the Chicago Cubs pushed the 2016 World Series to a winner take all Game 7 on Wednesday against the Cleveland Indians.

Cleveland is trying to break a curse of 68 years, while Chicago’s has not won a World Series in over a century, 108 years to be exact.

One of those longstanding droughts will come to an end at Progressive Field in Cleveland on Wednesday.

Chicago has returned from a 3-1 deficit in the series to tie it at 3-3. The Cubs will look to claim the title at the Fall Classic with one more win.

Regardless of how the series finishes, it will become one of the biggest sports stories of any generation. It has attracted millions of viewers on television. It actually won the audience ratings for Sunday night against NFL Sunday Night Football.

If the Cubs are able to win the series, it would be one of the biggest ever comebacks in baseball history. However, the odds are stacked against them.

Only six MLB teams in the history of the sport have managed to comeback from a 3-1 deficit in the postseason and having the final two games played on the road, but Chicago is trying to accomplish that. That equates to just 13.6% of the teams in this same situation coming out victorious.

Just three teams playing in the World Series, with the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates being the most recent, have returned from such a deficit when playing the final two games at their opponent’s park.

Chicago will have to face Corey Kluber who during the postseason has pitched 30 1/3 innings surrendering just three earned runs for a meager 0.89 ERA, with 35 strikeouts.

Whichever of the two teams wins on Wednesday, this series will be compared to other series in the past and the long awaited curse will be broken for one franchise and one city.

Cleveland rejoiced only four months ago when its Cavaliers brought a major professional sports championship to its city for the first time in 52 years with the 2015-16 NBA title

The city hopes that happens again when the Indians play on Wednesday, but they first must beat the Chicago Cubs a team that won 103 regular season games and has been the favorite to win the title the entire season.
