Astros sign Pedro Feliz

MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart is reporting that the Astros have signed Pedro Feliz. The deal is reportedly for one-year, and $4 million.
Feliz, a third baseman, played last season with the Philadelphia Phillies. During 2009 in the city of brotherly love, Feliz batted .266/.308/.386 with 12 homers. He also posted a wOBA of .302, with a line drive rate of 21.3%.
Feliz’s value mostly comes from the defensive side of the ball. He posted a UZR of 5.3 last year, his lowest number since 2002. His UZR slipped each of the past two years, but he figures to be an above average fielder again in 2010.
Feliz’s game was worth $5.7MM last year according to FanGraphs’ WAR data, so this deal falls right in line with his value. While I (and everyone else) may have ripped Ed Wade for paying Brandon Lyon $5 million, this deal is a much better one. Feliz figures to be a stopgap while the Astros try to find a longer term solution, but he will fit well with the offensive minded Astros.
The Astros’ were rumored to have interest in bring Miguel Tejada back to play third base, but that is out the window at this point. Tejada is going to have a hard time finding a suitor, but I’m sure he’ll land somewhere before the offseason is over.
