How Have CC and Lee Fared Against Their Opponents?

The Phillies and Yankees World Series will be a fun one. Game One will start Wednesday, and can be viewed on the Fox network. While the Phillies haven’t announced who will fill out the starting rotation for the series, they have named Cliff Lee their Game One starter. CC Sabathia will be making the start for the Yankees (surprise, surprise).

To kick off the series, let’s look at how the pitchers have fared against their opponents. To help keep the idea of sample size in mind, I have also provided how many at-bats they have against the pitcher.

CC Sabathia vs Phillies

Pedro Feliz – 6 AB, .000/.000/.000
Ryan Howard – 7, .429/.429/.571
Raul Ibanez – 40, .275/.326/.525
Jimmy Rollins – 11, .364/.364/.727
Carlos Ruiz – 3, .667/.667/.667
Matt Stairs – 1, .000/.333/.000
Chase Utley – 3, .000/.000/.000
Shane Victorino – 7, .429/.429/.429
Jayson Werth – 6, .000/.000/.000

Outside of Raul Ibanez, no one has faced Sabathia enough to get a reading from them. Now, onto Cliff Lee.

Cliff Lee vs Yankees

Melky Cabrera – 11 AB, .273/.333/.545
Robinson Cano – 18, .222/.263/.222
Johnny Damon – 22, .091/.130/.091
Derek Jeter – 27, .407/.467/.519
Hideki Matsui – 17, .294/.368/.412
Jorge Posada – 21, .286/.273/.667
Alex Rodriguez – 15, .333/.450/.733
Nick Swisher – 18, .333/.458/.444
Mark Teixeira – 23, .391/.462/.696

Because of his time with the Indians, Lee has more of a sample size against the Yanks. However, the number of at-bats these guys have is not enough to accurately predict how they will fare in the series.

You are all probably wondering: why am I showing you this if I don’t think it means anything? Because, it’s all we’ve got. While it isn’t necessarily an indicator of future success, it is a starting point. Plus, it’s still fun to look at, even if it tends to be meaningless.
