You Still Want Jesus Colome

For the second time this year, righty reliever Jesus Colome was released by his ball club. The Brewers released him earlier this week, after acquiring him in July from the Nationals, who had designated him for assignment.

Colome, 31, still has plenty of life in him. He throws a fastball in the mid 90’s, along with a slider and changeup. His ERA of 7.59 this year is highly inflated, and will certainly migrate towards his 4.66 career ERA if he plays in the majors next year.

His strikeout rate of 6.33 per 9 is very close to his averages, and his BB/9 of 2.53 is lower than it’s been since, well, ever. He allowed less than a HR per 9, keeping his FIP at 3.88, lower than it’s been since 2004 and the second lowest of his career. So what was inflating the ERA? A strand rate of 60.2% and a BABIP of .415 are the culprits.

For a guy having close to a career year, he can’t get much respect or recognition, can he? A team will give him another shot in 2010 due to his track record, and they will be happy they did. If he can get a solid defense behind him, I expect he will put up good numbers in ‘10. Believe me, you still want Jesus Colome.
