..El Duque has resurfaced, in Oklahoma City. The Redhawks have activated the 43 year-old Orlando Hernandez, who signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers in June. They’re hoping that he’ll soon contribute at the major league level in the rotation. He spent last year in the Mets minor leagues after having toe surgery. [AP]
..MLB.com is reporting that the Chicago Cubs have come to terms with first round draft pick, and UC Berkeley standout outfielder Brett Jackson. No word on where he’ll start his pro career, though I would bet it would be the short season A Northwest League. [MLB]
..St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Joel Pineiro tossed a two hit shutout over the Mets. For Pineiro this marks the end of a month long streak of loosing. He was able to induce 22 groundball outs to help record his 11th career complete game and his 5th career shutout. Talk about a way to put a streak to an end. [AP]
..The San Diego Padres have placed outfielder Brian Giles on the 15 Day Disabled list because of a right knee bruise. He bruised the knee against the Mariners on the 18th – the move is retro active to the 19th. To replace him the Friars activated outfielder Scott Hariston from the 15 Day DL. [AP]
..The Pittsburgh Pirates seem to be interested in recently DFA’d reliever Luis Ayala. He was designated for assignment, basically forcing his way off the team after asking to be traded, because he didn’t like his current role with the Twins. [Star Tribune]
“When you walk into my office and tell me you don’t like your role — and he talked about his contract for next year — you lose me right there,” Gardenhire said. “I don’t deal with that. We’re talking about winning now.”
When the Twins actually trusted him with a late lead, he blew saves.
..ESPN.com is reporting that Indians GM Mark Shapiro and Team President Paul Dolan are going to meet to discuss Manager Eric Wedge’s future with the ball club. According to many reports Wedge is close to loosing his job. Wedge is signed through 2010 but have had only two winning season in 7 years. [ESPN]
..The Yankees are going to have to make a decision on Cody Ransom soon, he’s eligible to come off the 60 Day DL. They need to either add him to the roster or expose him to waivers. He was on the DL with a aggravated quad that he originally injured in Spring Training – but kept the severity of the injury to himself. [Star Ledger]
“I don’t know that I would have because of the situation that we were in, Alex being out and it was an opportunity for me,” said Ransom, a 33-year-old minor league journeyman. “I was really hoping that could help the team and play well. But obviously I didn’t do that. I don’t regret anything, I don’t regret the way I handled it I don’t think.”
..According to MLB.com, MLBtv is going to broadcast in market New York Yankees games. This announcement comes shortly after Major League Baseball announced app to allow you to listen or watch MLBtv on your iPhone or iPod touch. [MLB]
“These agreements are an important part of our global effort to give fans greater access to our game,” Commissioner Bud Selig said. “It is important that fans in local markets have portable flexibility to stay connected to their favorite team if they can’t be at the ballpark, and I believe this represents a significant step in that direction.”
There will be other teams and markets, the next one to be announced soon.
