Baseball’s Best Bets (May 6, 2009)

Aaron Cook did his job yesterday but the Colorado Rockies offense didn’t as the Padres beat the Rox 2-1 in 10 innings.

Having lost 2 out of my last 3, it’s time to play it a bit bold with 3 rather large Wednesday favorites.

TODAY’S PICKS

Toronto Blue Jays (-158) over Los Angeles Angels
THE BET: 100 Units / Win = +100, Loss = -158

Roy Halladay has pitched really well against current Angels with a .205/.230/.256 batting line in 162 PAs. Even for Roy Halladay that’s good. His opponent, Anthony Ortega, hasn’t been overpowering in his first 2 starts so the Jays stand a good chance of scoring early. Typically, Halladay can go deep into the game so just the starting match-up alone makes this one worth it even at the hefty price.

Chicago Cubs (-148) over Houston Astros
THE BET: 100 Units / Win = +100, Loss = -148

Neither starter is likely to be around past the 6th and the Astros bullpen has to be worn out at this point with the amount of work they’ve put in over the past week. Rich Harden is extremely tough and should give the Cubs 5 strong innings before handing it over to the bullpen. Mike Hampton might give the Cubs a little trouble but that might just mean he matches Harden. Then the bullpens take over and right now the Astros ‘pen is running on fumes. I’ll take the more rested group here… even if the Cubs are likely to walk a few.

Los Angeles Dodgers (-191) over Washington Nationals
THE BET: 100 Units / Win = +100, Loss = -191

The lowly Nats had to fly across the country after a 10-10 suspended tie with the Astros on Tuesday and now must try to stop the Dodgers’ historical home winning streak. A win on Wednesday gives the Dodgers the record and they have to go through the worst team in baseball and the erratic Daniel Cabrera to do so. Can you say lambs to a slaughter?

YESTERDAY’S RECAP
