Baseball’s Best Bets (May 4, 2009)

It had to happen eventually, right? BDD’s BBBs finally posted a losing day after a pretty solid week. I was wrong about Matt Harrison and John Danks yesterday although I’d probably make the same play again given the chance.
On Monday there are a few games that I like but can’t recommend including Colorado over San Diego and Houston over Washington. Instead, here are:
TODAY’S PICKS
Milwaukee Brewers (-132) over Pittsburgh Pirates
THE BET: 100 Units / Win = +100, Loss = -132
Last week, Yovani Gallardo beat the Pirates all by himself. It’s very possible that Paul Maholm pitches as good as Ian Snell did in Gallardo’s gem last week but the Brewers do hit LHP (.270/.370/.455) a little better than they hit RHP (.242/.328/.408). Maholm hasn’t lost this year and Gallardo’s only loss came in a 1-0 outing against the Mets. In his short career, Gallardo is 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA against the Pirates while Maholm is 2-5 with a 4.59 ERA against the Brewers. The Pirates bats have gone cold recently and have posted zero runs in three of their last four games. Gallardo isn’t the kind of pitcher an offense gets healthy against, either.
