Baseball’s Best Bets (April 26, 2009)

Mark Buehrle was able to pitch his way in and out of trouble and the White Sox offense took care of the rest as I cruised to an easy win in my only bet of the day. Sunday is becoming the day to pick multiple road teams and usually that isn’t healthy but those are the games that look solid so…

TODAY’S PICKS

Philadelphia Phillies (-106) over Florida Marlins
THE BET: 100 Units / Win = +100, Loss = -106

Rumor has it the Marlins held a raffle amongst all left-handed fans and lucky winner Graham Taylor won so he gets the start on Sunday. Suddenly, the Marlins are not the same team that beat the Nationals six times… shocker! Actually, this pick has little to do with the Marlins starting pitcher who might have a good game against the Phillies who have a habit of making unproven, young pitchers look better than they really are. This pick is all about Jamie Moyer who has a .256/.322/.433 batting line against current Marlins and is 11-1 with a 2.95 ERA in 12 starts vs. Florida and 6-0 with a 1.59 ERA in Florida. Those are impressive numbers. This line might be a little riskier closer to game time and at one point the Phillies were an underdog but up to -125, the Phillies are a good bet.

Washington Nationals (+172) over New York Mets
THE BET: 100 Units / Win = +172, Loss = -100

I was impressed with Jordan Zimmermann in his debut and I’ve always assumed that Oliver Perez is just as likely to blow up as he is to pitch a gem. Then there’s Perez’s career batting line against current Nats — .309/.416/.553 in 185 PAs — which isn’t very good. I have spotted a few big ‘dogs earlier this week so you might want to get on the bandwagon now.

Detroit Tigers (-142) over Kansas City Royals
THE BET: 100 Units / Win = +100, Loss = -142

Armando Galarraga has two successful starts against the Royals already in his career. Plus, the impressive Galarraga is a better road pitcher than he is home pitcher (by about half a run). On the other side is Sidney Ponson who should spot Galarraga some runs and give the Tigers a fighting chance in this one. -142 is a big favorite for a road team and if it goes over -155, I would back off but at -142, this one is still doable.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP

Yesterday’s Winners
Chicago White Sox (-153) over Toronto Blue Jays (White Sox, 10-2)

None
