Baseball’s Best Bets (April 14, 2009)

A winning day wasn’t all that satisfying with the passing of Harry the K. Coincidentally, it was those fightin’ Phils that hooked us up with the win despite Brad Lidge’s blood pressure raising effort. Lidge was up three when he entered and gave up a two-run blast to Ryan Zimmerman then made Adam Dunn and Elijah Dukes look foolish and got Nick Johnson to ground out and the Phils got to put another one in the win column… and so did we.

Unfortunately, with my past record of swinging and missing on days where I have made multiple picks, I have backed off on doing so for a while but thought it would be fun to throw in the picks I decided to not make.

- Blue Jays (+119) over Twins… The Jays have won five straight when a lefty starts on the other side and are 25-2 after allowing 5+ runs in their previous outing. Conversely, the Twins are 19-7 in their last 26 starts vs. LHP. That’s keeping us away.

- Rangers (-139) over Orioles… Two bad pitchers makes me want to go for the home team. But I’m not going to touch it.

- Cardinals (-137) over D-backs… The line keeps moving to make the Cardinals less of a favorite which entices me to bet on the Cardinals with Chris Carpenter on the mound. The fact the bookies are tempting me makes me say “TRAP!”

TODAY’S PICKS

New York Yankees (+113) over Tampa Bay Rays
THE BET: 100 Units / Win = +113, Loss = -100

Again, A.J. Burnett takes the mound after the Yankees have lost two straight. He’s 7-4 with a 2.98 ERA in his career against the Rays and 2-2 with a 2.30 ERA at Tropicana Field. His opponent Matt Garza is 1-2 with a 4.56 ERA. Garza’s opponent batting line (.246/.313/.344) is a bit better than Burnett’s (.252/.328/.423) but we’re not going to let that scare us off.
