Baseball Daily Digest was saddened to learn today of the passing of one of the site’s regular contributors, John Brattain.
In his last post at BDD, John mentioned he was scheduled for heart surgery on Monday morning. Unfortunately, John did not make it through the procedure.
Our condolences go out to John’s family. His “mix of optimism and snark” will be missed at BDD.
BDD founder Joe Hamrahi will share his own personal tribute to John later tonight.

John was my mentor and he gave me indispensable advice whether it was about baseball, writing, or just life in general.
Even when he was talking with someone who had a completely different perspective on an issue than he did, he never got angry, he never got out of line; he treated every single person he dealt with with respect and dignity.
My association with John has made me a much better person and I am extremely grateful for having known him and been privy to the mechanisms inside his head. No one had quicker wit than John. I will dearly miss John and I send my deepest condolences to the Brattain family.
