…According to General Manager Frank Wren of the Atlanta Braves they are interested in several outfielders including Ken Griffey Junior. This puts a spin on the “Griffey returning to Seattle” frenzy of the last couple weeks. [AP]
…Out of the New York Mets camp manager Jerry Manuel is contemplating moving shortstop Jose Reyes out of the lead off spot and move him lower in the order. [AP]
“My emphasis will be on team vs. individual. I think that message is so critical,” he said Saturday.
“This is not about statistical success. This is about winning as a team, and you have to put people in positions that you feel is best to win as a team,” Manuel said during a 40-minute news conference, one day before New York’s first official workout for pitchers and catchers.
“Whether that means Jose batting second, third, whatever—first or leading off—you have to accomplish that. And that’s a big part of the message throughout spring training: The game takes precedent over individual stats.”
…The Cleveland Indians have signed Tony Graffanino to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. He played 25 games last season for the Indians Triple A team in Buffalo coming off of a knee injury. [MLB]
…Philadelphia Phillies reliever J.C. Romero who has to sit out the first 50 games of the season for testing positive for a banned substance still think he’s done nothing wrong and is still pretty steamed about the whole thing. [CBS]
“I didn’t do nothing wrong,” Romero said Saturday when pitchers and catchers reported to camp for the World Series champions.
“It’s ridiculous. I don’t think I should be suspended 50 games. It doesn’t make any sense to me. They have some rules they have to follow, and it’s very unfortunate that I have to be the one paying the price. In my mind, I think it’s insane. I think it’s unfair. I’m being, they say, negligent, but then I’m being accused as somebody who takes steroids. That doesn’t fly too well. But it is what it is.”
…Kansas City Royals minor league outfielder Jarrod Dyson has been suspended 50 games for testing positive for amphetamines. His suspension will start at the beginning of the season. He’s the sixth minor league suspended this year. [CBS]
…The Los Angeles Angels have agreed to terms with right handed pitcher Ervin Santana, avoiding arbitration. It’s a 4 year deal worth $30 million. [CBS]
…According to Brian Hock of MLB.com Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez plans to meet with the media on Tuesday. Though there has been no official word from the Yankees, it’s pretty much expected to happen. [MLB]
