Disciplinary action was handed down by Bob Watson, President of On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, on Tuesday following the incidents during Sunday’s game between the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals. Two players — Royals catcher Miguel Olivo and pitcher Zack Greinke – and both managers were suspended for their roles.
Olivo and Greinke both received a five game suspension and were fined an undisclosed amount. Olivo received the suspension and fine for inciting the bench-clearing brawl and throwing a punch while Greinke was suspended and fined for intentionally throwing at a batter after both benches were warned following the bench-clearing incident.
Royals manager Trey Hillman received a one-game suspension and undislosed fine for Greinke’s intentional actions and White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was suspended for two games and fined for making contact with umpire Tim Timmons and for comments following the game.
Both Greinke and Olivo appealed their suspensions. Hillman will serve his suspension tonight when the Royals face the Red Sox and Guillen will serve his suspension tonight and tomorrow when the White Sox face the Tigers.
