The Orioles today announced that OF Jay Gibbons has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right labrum tear. A corresponding roster move has not been made at this time. Gibbons will have surgery on Tuesday in Cincinnati. The surgery will be performed by Cincinnati Reds Medical Director Dr. Timothy Kremchek and end Gibbons’ season. The Orioles have purchased the contract of CA/1B J.R. House from AAA Norfolk.
The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have claimed infielder Brian Barden off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Barden will be optioned to the Cardinals Triple-A Memphis roster.
Seattle Mariners left fielder Raul Ibañez has been named the American League Player of the Week after hitting five home runs during a six-game road trip at Baltimore and Chicago (AL). The award is the third of career and second as a Mariner. Ibañez, 35, hit .481 (13×27) with 6 runs, 2 doubles, 5 home runs and 11 RBI. His seven extra base hits gave him a Major League best 1.111 slugging percentage over the last week. He started the road trip going 3-for-6 with a pair of home runs and four RBI.
The Chicago Cubs today activated infielder/outfielder Daryle Ward from the 15-day disabled list and placed outfielder Cliff Floyd on the bereavement list.
The Washington Nationals optioned left-handed pitcher Billy Traber to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday. Righthander Shawn Hill is expected to be reinstated from the 15-Day Disabled List Tuesday, and make the start that night against Philadelphia at RFK Stadium.
