August 12, 2007 “Short Stops” Around the League

 

Robinson Cano went 3-for-4, and Jason Giambi homered and drove in 2 runs as the Yankees completed the sweep of the Indians, 5-3. Andy Pettitte allowed 2 runs in 7 2/3 innings for New York.

Magglio Ordonez hit 2 home runs, walked twice, scored twice and drove in 4, and 6 other players had at least one RBI as the Tigers exploded for an 11-6 win over the A’s. Marco Scutaro doubled twice, homered, and drove in 4 runs for Oakland.

Moises Alou went 3-for-4 with 2 home runs, 4 RBI, and 3 runs scored, and Carlos Delgado had 2 hits, homered, scored twice and drove in 2 runs as the Mets salvaged the final game of their series against the Marlins, 10-4.

Brian Giles hit 2 solo home runs and walked 3 times, and Khalil Greene went 4-for-5 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI as the Padres knocked off the Reds, 10-4, to give Jake Peavy his 13th win of the season. Norris Hopper had 3 hits for Cincinnati.

Miguel Tejada hit a 2-run home run off Eric Gagne to tie the game in the 8th inning, and Kevin Millar hit a 3-run walk-off homer in the 10th to send the Orioles to a 6-3 win over the Red Sox. Millar had 3 hits on the day for Baltimore. J.D. Drew went 3-for-5, and Curt Schilling allowed just one unearned run in 6 innings for Boston who now find themselves just 4 games up on New York in the AL East.

Ty Wigginton, Lance Berkman, and Craig Biggio all hit home runs, and Woody Williams gave Houston 7 strong innings as the Astros beat the Brewers, 6-4. Geoff Jenkins and J.J. Hardy each had 2 hits, a homer, and 2 RBI for Milwaukee.

Jose Guillen doubled, homered, and drove in 2 runs, and Adrian Beltre went deep and added 3 RBI as the Mariners blanked the White Sox, 6-0. Jeff Weaver pitched a complete game, 5-hit shutout for Seattle. Bobby Jenks of Chicago tied the major league record today by retiring his 41st consecutive batter.

Aaron Miles went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI, and Ryan Ludwick homered and drove in 4 to lead the Cardinals to a 12-2 rout of the Dodgers. Anthony Reyes gave up just 2 runs in 6 innings for St. Louis.

Troy Tulowitzki doubled, homered, and drove in 3 runs, and the Colorado bullpen threw 5 2/3 no-hit innings as the Rockies rallied to double up the Cubs, 6-3.

Tom Gorzelanny tossed a complete game, 5-hit shutout, and Josh Phelps tripled, homered, and drove in 4 runs to help the Pirates complete the 3 game sweep of the Giants, 5-0.

Orlando Cabrera had 3 hits, Chone Figgins had 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBI, and a home run, and Jered Weaver allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits over 7 1/3 innings as the Angels swept the series from the Twins with a 6-2 win on Sunday.

Jesus Flores went 3-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI, and Ryan Church went deep and added 2 more RBI as the Nationals scored 4 in the 8th inning and 2 in the 9th inning to come from behind and stun the Diamondbacks, 7-6. Mark Reynolds went 3-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBI for Arizona. Micah Owings pitched well enough for the win, but the Diamondbacks bullpen couldn’t preserve the victory.

A.J. Burnett returned from the disabled list to pitch 7 1/3 brilliant innings, and Lyle Overbay collected 3 hits and drove in 2 runs to lead the Blue Jays to a 4-1 win over the Royals. Burnett allowed just one run on 3 hits for Toronto.


Ryan Howard hit a 3-run homer, and Jimmy Rollins had 2 hits and scored 3 runs as the Phillies jumped back into 2nd place in the NL East with a 5-3 win over the Braves.

David Murphy ripped 3 doubles and scored 3 runs, and Marlon Byrd and Ian Kinsler knocked in 2 runs apiece as the Angels cruised to an easy 9-1 win over the Devil Rays. Jonny Gomes had 3 hits for Tampa Bay.
