July 16, 2007 “Short Stops” Around the League

Jim Thome reached base 5 times, and Henry Owens, Paul Konerko, and Rob Mackowiak each drove in 3 runs as the White Sox erupted for 9 runs in the 6th inning and held on to beat the Indians, 11-10. Franklin Gutierrez went 4-for-5 with a double, home run, and 3 RBI for Cleveland.

Ken Griffey Jr. reached base 4 times, homered, and drove in 4 runs, and pitcher Bobby Livingston used his bat (4-for-4!) and arm (2 runs over 5 innings) to help the Reds dominate the Braves, 10-3. Yunel Escobar and Chipper Jones each reached base 4 times, and Andruw Jones drove in 3 runs for Atlanta.

Willy Taveras stole 2 bases and scored 3 runs, and Matt Holliday doubled and drove in 3 runs as the Rockies outlasted the Pirates, 10-8. Ryan Doumit had 2 hits and 2 RBI for Pittsburgh.

Dmitri Young went 2-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBI, and pitcher Mike Bacsik allowed just one earned run in 5 2/3 innings as the Nationals sent the Astros to their 4th straight defeat, 4-3. Carlos Lee reached base 3 times, homered and drove in 2 runs for Houston.

Rookie Kason Gabbard pitched a complete game 3-hit shutout, and Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, and Dustin Pedroia all went deep off Brian Bannister to lead the Red Sox to a 4-0 shutout over the Royals.

Rich Hill allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits over 8 innings, and Aramis Ramirez connected on a 2-out, 2-run double in the bottom of the 8th inning to push the Cubs past the Giants, 3-2. Pedro Feliz reached base 3 times, homered, and scored both runs for San Francisco. Chicago has now won 4 in a row while the Giants have dropped 5 straight.

Adam Kennedy doubled, homered, and had 3 hits, and Chris Duncan hit a home run and knocked in 3 as the Cardinals defeated the Marlins, 5-3. Braden Looper pitched 6 + solid innings. Miguel Cabrera homered again for Florida in the loss.

Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui, and Robinson Cano each hit home runs, and Andy Phillips drove in 2 runs to put New York ahead for good as the Yankees beat the Blue Jays, 6-4. Troy Glaus doubled, homered, reached base 4 times, and drove in 3 runs for Toronto.

J.J. Hardy had 2 hits and scored 2 runs, and Ryan Braun homered and drove in 2 as the Brewers lineup provided just enough offense to hold off the Diamondbacks, 4-3. All 3 of Arizona’s runs came via solo shots off Milwaukee starter Dave Bush. Stephen Drew, Mark Reynolds, and Chris Young all smacked home runs.

Yuniesky Betancourt went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, and Horacio Ramirez allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits in 7 innings as the Mariners knocked off the Orioles, 4-2. Ichiro Suzuki was back in the lineup tonight as the DH for Seattle. He singled, doubled, walked, stole a base, and scored a run. I guess he’s OK!

Michael Barrett went 3-for-4 and drove in 3 of San Diego’s 5 runs, and David Wells allowed just one run over 6 strong innings as the Padres quieted the Mets, 5-1. Jorge Sosa pitched 6 solid innings in his return from the disabled list, and David Wright contributed 3 hits for New York.

Jamey Wright pitched 7 scoreless innings, and Marlon Byrd and Jerry Hairston each drove in 2 runs as the Rangers hammered Oakland even farther into the ground with a 4-1 win over the Athletics. The A’s have now dropped 8 straight.

Jeff Kent and Matt Kemp each hit 3-run home runs, and Brad Penny allowed just one run on 4 hits in 7 innings as the Dodgers crushed the Phillies, 10-3. Penny’s record now stands at 11-1. Los Angeles has won 5 in a row, while the Phillies have given up 10 runs the last two nights in back-to-back losses.
