July 15, 2007 “Short Stops” Around the League

 

Travis Hafner and Ryan Garko each reached base 3 times and hit home runs, and Fausto Carmona allowed just 2 runs over 7 innings as the Indians took the rubber game of the series from Royals, 5-3.

Buddy Carlyle allowed just 1 run on 4 hits in 8 innings, and Edgar Renteria went 4-for-5 to lead Atlanta to a 3-game sweep of the Pirates, 5-1.

Miguel Cabrera reached base 4 times and hit 2 solo home runs, and Josh Willingham also homered as the Marlins beat the Nationals, 5-3.

Jose Reyes reached base 3 times, homered, and drove in 2 runs, and Oliver Perez pitched 6 strong innings in his return from the disabled list as the Mets downed the Reds, 5-2. Lastings Milledge drove in 2 more runs for New York, and. Cincinnati’s Adam Dunn hit a mammoth home run that took out several light bulbs high up on the Shea Stadium scoreboard.

Aubrey Huff reached base 3 times, tripled, and drove in 2 runs, and Brian Roberts and Corey Patterson each went deep as the Orioles knocked off the White Sox for the third day in a row, 5-3. Jermaine Dye hit 2 solo home runs for Chicago.

Derek Jeter had 2 hits, homered, walked, and drove in 3 runs, and Andy Phillips added 2 hits, a triple, and 2 RBI as the Yankees held off the Devil Rays, 7-6. B.J. Upton had 3 hits, Ty Wigginton went 4-for-4, and Carlos Pena homered and drove in 3 runs for Tampa Bay who lost despite collecting 16 hits.

Jeff Suppan pitched 6 solid innings and even drove in a run at the plate to help the Brewers overtake the Rockies, 4-3. Corey Hart also had 2 hits, and Ryan Braun reached base twice for Milwaukee.

Lyle Overbay went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk, and Jesse Litsch allowed just one run in 6 2/3 innings as the Blue Jays edged the Red Sox, 2-1, to split the 4-game series with Boston. Josh Beckett was the hard luck loser, allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits over 8 innings of work.

Nick Punto drove in 2 runs, and Joe Mauer went 3-for-4 and drove in the winning run in the 9th inning as the Twins rallied to beat the A’s, 4-3. Eric Chavez had 2 hits and a home run for Oakland.

Derrek Lee went 3-for-3 with a walk and a 3-run home run, and Angel Pagan picked up 2 hits, homered, and drove in 2 runs to help lead the Cubs to a 7-6 win over the Astros. Lance Berkman reached base 4 times and drove in 3 runs, and Mike Lamb had 3 hits and a home run for Houston.

Mark Teixeira reached base 3 times, doubled, and hit the game winning home run in the 11th inning to propel the Rangers to a 5-4 victory over the Angels. Chone Figgins had 3 hits, a walk, 2 RBI, and 3 SB for Los Angeles in defeat.

Curtis Granderson had 3 hits and scored 3 runs, Marcus Thames had 2 hits, a home run, and drove in 4, and Magglio Ordonez added another home run and drove in 3 as the Tigers slugged their way past the Mariners, 11-7. Ichiro Suzuki was hit by a pitch on the right thigh in the 5th inning and had to leave the game. He is listed as day-to-day.

Russell Martin had 3 hits and a walk, and Matt Kemp had 3 hits, a triple and scored 2 runs to lead Brett Tomko and the Dodgers to a 3-game sweep of the Giants, 5-3. Tomko gave up just one earned run in 5 innings. Dave Roberts had 3 hits for San Francisco.

Justin Germano pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings, and Milton Bradley had 2 hits and knocked in 2 runs as the Padres blanked the Diamondbacks, 4-0.

Adam Wainwright threw 7 scoreless innings, and Albert Pujols went 3-for-5 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI as the Cardinals clobbered the Phillies, 10-2. St. Louis belted a total of 6 home runs in the game.
